Julie Marie Duke: Bio

Before Julie Marie could talk she was singing herself to sleep at night...and she's been singing ever since...

Julie Marie has completed her new EP, “Upside Down”, which is available on iTunes. This CD is all about the lyrics, from the political commentary of “The Old Man Says” to the sweet hopeful innocence of “Upside Down” to the timeless “Hidden Track”, Julie offers something for listeners of all kinds. The songs on “Upside Down” were written and recorded during her years in Mendocino, a creatively stimulating episode in her life. “Being compared to Leonard Cohen and John Lennon is a bit intimidating” Julie says, “I just want to tell the story within the song so that others can relate to it, can feel it.” In the studio, Julie purposefully kept the arrangements sparse, intimate, so that the listener feels like they are hanging out in her living room with her.

Julie Marie toured this summer with fellow singer/songwriter Valerie Markell. “Valerie is amazing, her guitar playing is so pure, so beautiful, and her voice like an angel’s…really.” They have been working out complex harmonies to each other’s original songs and selecting choice covers to fill out their sets. “This gives us a chance to pay homage to some of our influences, such as John Prine and Lucinda Williams”.

Currently Julie Marie resides on Bainbridge Island and when she isn't singing and playing she is enjoying walking her dogs during these cool fall days...
